Champions League 2016/17

Postby Mixball » Fri Mar 18, 2016 12:03 am

A little ahead but here we are with something new:

Women’s EHF Champions League – The Executive agreed to a change in the distribution of start places within the Women’s EHF Champions League.

Instead of the current system where each federation ranked 1-12 receives one guaranteed place, from the 2016/17 season the top two federations will each get two guaranteed places whilst federations ranked 3-10 will each get one guaranteed place.

There will be no change to the allocation of the remaining four places, which will be awarded by an EHF Executive decision and/or played for via Qualification Tournaments]

And for qual:

Qualification Tournament organisation – In a change to the previous system, the organisational right for the Qualification Tournaments in the Women’s EHF Champions League will not be decided by a draw but according to the seeding of the teams.

Very good news. Common sense prevailed. Eventually.

So Denmark and Hungary will have 2 teams automatically in the groups.

My question is: will they have another one for the qualification tournaments also? I think it would be too much and the other countries wouldn't have a good chance to enter their teams.

No, it'd mean 3 CL places... and it's impossible.

That's what I thought, too much..and it's already too much, regarding the fact that their second team isn't actually CL-quality in my opinion..but who knows :-k

Vardar barely made it to the CL groups without going through qualifications, because Macedonia has low-ranking

^ I know and I understand it can be frustrating. Many years ago it was the other way round, most of the decent Romanian players were playing abroad, especially at Krim, Podravka, Hypo or teams from Denmark. I agree though, they've gained a lot of experience. But honestly, I hate the multinational Quatar-type teams, be it Romanian or Scandinavian. If I could, I would always chose a mix of 75-80% national players and 20-25% good foreign players (if they are really needed). For me, the Vardar-like project in Bucharest is a bad example. On the other hand (and leaving aside the financial/managerial troubles), I think HCM Baia Mare is a good example. With just 4 decent-to-good foreign players they achieved a lot this year.

Ref, except for Denmark (and a bit Sweden), the other Scandinavian clubs didn't count in the CL. Larvik only nowadays. Romanian and Hungarian (a bit after) clubs were winning European Cup trophies when you didn't hear about handball in Norway.

Denmark and Hungary are the best, that's why they have so many places. Glassverket and Byasen would now be at relegation in those leagues.

I don´t know how old you are, but the so called CL had another name in the old days and was a cup, like the others. Romania, Hungary, Hypo, Germany (DDR and BRD) and certainly USSR with Yugoslavia were the great nations. In Scandinavia Byåsen was actually one of the big contenders before Denmark came on. Marit Breivik was head there back in the days. Trine Haltvik with Mia Hermansson(later Høgdal), the latter lured to Hypo and Prokop´s dodgy schillings eventually. She had a lot to tell when she returned. Alongside Bækkelaget, obviously, with Anja Andersen, Susann Goksør & co. They also had a Corean star. Byåsen was best in the league but never stood a chance in the Champions Cup, as they never got under the skin of the refereeing culture. Only eastern clubs did back then. Bækkelaget, however was good in the lower cups and won. Several seasons with success, but under achieved the same way as Byåsen due to lack of "cultural" skills.

Swedish clubs have never done anything on the international scene.

I don't know what "cultural skills" you are talking about.

I don't think it's "cultural skills." It's more diplomatic skills. :)

I suspect a couple of "wildcards"/ "fill-ins" in the group phase to either Sweden, Slovenia or Croatia to be "handed out".
Depending on the usual fall out of teams from ex. Spain, Italy, Portugal etc. and despite further wildcards added,
the qual tournament are probably still reduced to only two groups resulting only two teams to qualify.
Just like this and last season.

Can someone tell me how EHF ranks teams for seeding. By a nacional ranking or some club ranking?
Thanks :)

How will the pots look like? I mean in which pot will FCM and FTC be? Also it depends on who will be the french and russian champion.
It's funny that Hypo is still directly qualified for the CL.

Vardar has 3 final four bronze medals now. Larvik has MR, silver from F4 and 1/4, not better than Vardar. :)
