Waterpolo

Postby martinmk » Sun Jan 06, 2008 3:11 pm

Yes I changed the topic in English now so everyone can understand it.

Baltazar the EC will be played in Malaga, Spain and it will be played in July. The draw for the groups will be on 30th January.

BTW in March in Romania we'll play qualifications for the Olympics.

That's great. Real thanks for that, because I also like this sport very much.

Romania has a really good men's team in this sport. Last years have been really fantastic for this sport in Romania, but performances haven't always been constant.

2005, W Champ. Montreal - 6th
2006, W Cup, Budapest - 6th
2006, EC, Belgrade - 4th
2007, World League, Berlin - 6th at our first participation at the final tournament

These performances are our best til now, given the following conditions:
- 3 olympic pools: Arad, Oradea, Bucharest
- 20 clubs (junior+senior)
- 500-600 enrolled players (Partizan Beograd only has at least 1000 polo players)

The Romanian authorities are absolutely careless about the potential of this sport in Romania. No swimming pools are built, the existing ones are being sold to imobilliary entrepreneurs and then demolished. Very few children practice this sport and there are only 3 or 4 cities where this sport is practiced: Oradea (the best), Bucharest and Arad.

National medias give little importance to this sport, but swimming pools stands are at least half full at most of the games, including important junior games.

It is one of the 2 team olympic sports at which Romania still has a chance for Beijing. The other one is women's handball.

The women's water polo sector doesn't exist.

Regarding the Olympic Qualifying tournament: it will take place in Oradea, between the 2nd and the 9th of March, in a swimming pool built in 2005.

The groups are:

A: Romania, Russia, Brazil, Greece, Kazakhstan, tbc
B: Mexico, Germany, Iran, Italy, Canada, Macedonia (and the guys have written "Macedonia" in the official program too ;))

First 3 teams go to Beijing.

Additional data about this tournament can be found here: http://www.frpolo.ro/FINA-Oradea2008/do ... -small.pdf

Yeah! By 1 goal. That was actually a good performance by our guys.

Hungary and Serbia are somewhere in their own league in this sport, and Montenegro is not far from them. Our men must keep improving. We have a great coach, ex-player Vlad Hagiu and a very talented squad where experience and youth mixes up in a beautiful way. But they must be more constant.

Don't worry for that, Romania will improve from day to day ...

For me they are 3 groups of national teams in waterpolo :
1. Hungary, Montenegro, Croatia and Serbia
2. Spain, Italy, Romania, Germany, greece and Russia
3. all the others

Up until 2 years ago, Romania were known as the "butchers" in the waterpolo... Man your players played rough...

How about know? Did they change?

P.S. The Ministry of youth and sport of Macedonia decided to build 9 swimming pools to support the sport after the success of qualifying on the EC with foreign players
And so many talents both in swimming and waterpolo got wasted due to the lack of pools so far
"Nice" work  ... But better late than ever.

Didn't know that about our team? How far back are we talking about because generations have changed after the 1996-2000 cycle. And how hard could they have been? It is a very tough physical sport and I don't have the opportunity to watch it constantly so I really don't know how to appreciate an excessive brutal game.

@Bosko

I am sorry to have forgotten Croatia from that top I have made. For me Hungary and Serbia are some sort of unreal water polo powers. I really don't know much about Montenegro, because they didn't have the occasion to build a palmares so far, but being a part of the ex-yugoslav school means they are really tough. They will all get their chances in Beijing and I can't wait to see that tournament!

@Goran
The Gouvernment promised to build 70 swimming pools in Romania, too, including a super-complex in Bucharest. We'll just add that to the new National Stadium, the Sports Hall specially designed to host matches of the 2009 men handball WC that was eventually (and fairly) given to Croatia and the 5000 seats Sports Hall promised to Brasov.

I am so sick of these promises, because eventually nothing happens, politicians get their money for the projects or the votes for their promises and after that they blame "divine intervention" for not being able to build any of them.

3 teams, but with the African Qualis being cancelled, it seems there will be 4 places from Oradea to Beijing.

It's one of the few sports we're still good at. Too bad it's so boring.
Women's World Volleyball Championship
20.10.2018, Yokohama (JPN)
1. Serbia 2. Italy 3. China
The history is made. Thank you, girls!

Volleyball, basketball, football, handball (even though I can't understand what's wrong with all your club teams) + water polo.

And the new-wave tennis players from Serbia are amazing. Don't be so dramatic. Considering the tough period your country has been through, I'd say you're doing alright. The question is: is this a level you've achieved by trying to progress in very difficult conditions or is it some kind of inercy and things are going for the worse? This is for you to know, and if so, to tell us.
