To be popular a sport must be accessible to many people.
One can take a ball and play football almost anywhere.
Or use a smaller ball to throw and catch, shoot at a goal/net –handball.
And as Karel said budgets and salaries are not everything. They are important but not the one and only factor.
I watch hockey only at WCh and Olympic games semifinals and finals.
I support European teams against North America and if USA plays against Canada my fav is Canada.
So everyone has their own preferences and I respect anyone’s choice about fav sports.

League Attendance
9. Great Britain - Elite Ice Hockey League 2,252
Icehockey is a lot more popular in GB than Basketball.

Medvescak Zagreb is the most popular club on the balcan now days.

IceFever - Medveščak-Olimpija Ljubljana, Arena Zagreb

Medveščak - Vienna Capitals

ITA/FRA plays icehockey world cup. ITA have a decent league just as France.

Weak league even in Latvia but do you know that Icehockey is a lot more popular in Latvia than football ?.

When Sweden and Canada play in Budapest, 10.000 fans.

In one, two matches - yes. But as I have said that before: it is impossible to win ANY medal for teams, which are not in "big 7" (CAN, USA, SWE, FIN, RUS, CZE, SVK) and that would be a real surprise. Last time some different team won a WCh medal in ice hockey in... 1953. Quite long time ago. There are much more teams, which can achieve something in any other team sport.

What about handball, between 1990 and 2000 only Russia and Sweden could win and today it is even worse only France.

Basketball has only "big" 4.. Spain, Serbia, Greece and Russia no one else can win. And very littel cares about basketball in Russia. Sometimes LTU play semifinal.

Why is it that the best vollyball club in europ only has 2.5 milion euro budget ?. Compare with hockey ST Petersburg 180 milion euros budget. Partizan playd F4 in basketball 2 milion euro budget, Cibona from Zagreb has no fans shown by statistics only 2500 fans per match.

Here is the explenation, cheak out vollyball spectators statistics in CL.

EC in Turkey no spectators at all, WC in Japan no spectators at all.

Only Poland and Brazil cares.

And still no one make the travel to watch own team on EC and WC and 35 spectators show up for a CL match in Sofia :D

Final4 in Prag 8.000 spactators in a arena with capacity 16.000.

Budgets are also based on TV viewers.

I am not any vollyball expert but it didint take me long time to figure out why such small budgets in Vollyball. Thank you internet :D

Handball aint that big as we all want it to be. I wish it wos different.

Don't you worry about the use of internet in Macedonia...I see no reason to search the internet for statistics for sports that honestly, I couldn't care less about...
Also, statistics do not necessarily show the popularity of a certain sport...For example, here, the average attendance at a football match is less than 1000 people...Does that mean that football here is not popular? Of course not...

This has nothing to do with the popularity of the sport...I'd love to go and watch our girls in Brasil, but not everyone can afford such a trip.

Ye name is Tommy Salo. Hockey is mega giga big in Sweden (might be understandable with all the nice results for the past 100 years)

I mean people still haress him 9 years later  would not even happen to a football player.

The first years were difficult for him in elitserien all away fans made fool of Salo.

We destroyd Canada just before the 1/4 clash with BLS. All our players playd in NHL most of them NHL stars BLS with only 1 NHL player at the time Ruslan Salei. Prob the biggest hockey suprise ever.

But anyway this dont happen every day to our team ;)

Dropped the puck, not ball, of course. #-o
Thx, Tommy Salo, yes now I remember. And he was also a great keeper at that time I recall. And you haven't even forgiven the guy yet. :(
It is the same old story on big stars being to happy and fed up in their clubs to even consider making some effort at NT level. Sometimes it's better to bring young talented players that are much more hungry for succes to WC or OG if possible imo.

Two weeks ago, at 4-nations tournament Slovakia Cup, arena in Bratislava welcomed first fans after its pre-WCh reconstruction.

Image
More photos: http://hokej.sme.sk/c/5761916/bratislav ... tavbe.html

But the most interesting fact about this "fantastic" arena is:
Construction costs: 96 000 000 € (capacity for ice hockey matches: 10 000, only reconstruction 2009-2011, only ice arena) = 8 600 € wasted for one place

Compare it with another similar new middle-eastern Europe arenas...

Riga Arena (Riga, LAT): 28 000 000 € (capacity for ice hockey matches: 10 300, new building opened in 2006, multifunction arena) = 2 718 € spent for one place
Siemens Arena (Vilinus, LTU): 28 000 000 € (capacity for ice hockey matches: 8 750, new building opened in 2004, multifunction arena) = 3 200 € spent for one place
Steel Arena* (Košice, SVK): 22 200 000 € (capacity for ice hockey matches: 8 437, 90% new building opened in 2006, multifunction arena) = 2 660 € spent for one place

*second venue for 2011 WCh

Now re-read it and take a think what's possible in our beautiful Slovakia...

10.000 arena maybe is to small for WC final ?.

Anyway will the Slovakia-Sweden handball match be playd in this arena or in Bratislava arena with almost the same capacity.

PS ! why is it that this arena is so expensive ? i mean arena in LTU looks more modern than this one and still only 28 milion euros  . I would say that Riga arena is prity much the same as this one.

Did you use some super expensive material or what is it that makes it so expensive ?.

I would build an arena as in LTU. Have a more moderna look and also much much much cheaper.

Because some pockets in Slovakia are too big. Did you hear about cancelled deaflympic games 2011? If not, read some articles. And that's the same problem, some people just feel not rich enough. Huge money lost in nowhere belongs to Slovakia as so as wind-mills to Netherlands.

You could build much better arena with 96 milion euro. Since they wasted so much money they should build a modern looking arena. I mean this arena looks like Hovet arena in Stockholm that is 65 years old.

Slovakia : Slovenia 3 : 1.

Sweden : Norway later today. We have 63 NHL players, 58 players rejected to play WC. But still I expect at least semifinal.

Norway : Sweden 5 : 4 :) what the hell.

Worst of all Norway media celebrate like they won world cup in football or something -).

And no one mention that we miss 58 NHL players, 14 KHL players and even players from our elitserien has told no thanks to the world cup, players like Davidsson and Liv. Never happened before that our europ PRO players told no thanks.

Tipical Norway and shows how pathethic sport nation they are :D .

This world cup seems to have lost the status at least among our players, no one cares about it they want to spend some time with kids and girls.

Winter olympic the only world cup.

OK, Staffan, I know - you lack many class players in your team. But what did you expect? That Norwegians would be sad with victory over you? No matter who plays in Swedish team - they play as SWEDEN in WORLD Championships and I'm not surprised with the joy in Norway. Does it happen often that Norway beat Sweden in ice hockey? I don't think so...
I suppose we would celebrate victory over Sweden in Poland as well, even if you had wheelchair team or something  (we beat you in Calgary 88' 1:0 last time, but the result was postponed after some not allowed substance had been found in the blood of one of our players)
However - I think Sweden will take better place in this tournament than Norway and NOR-SWE result won't change it. It's ice hockey and the results in group phase have no big meaning...
