Brazilian National League

Postby Fabbr » Wed Aug 27, 2014 8:05 pm

When talking with Gyms in another topic, I came up with the idea of making a thread about brazilian league for those who might be interested in. And here we are.
Brazilian national league will start next september, and it will count with 12 participants.
The overall level of brazilian league it’s similar, as far as I can see, to some weak european leagues like spanish , for instance. Although, in the last Universitary Handball World Cup brazilian team, with national league players, beated Russia quite easily in the final, and russian team counted only with players of it’s own national league.
The current champion is Supergasbrás/Concórdia, a team from southern Brazil, state of Santa Catarina.
This year (2014), this is the list of participants:

Cascavel/FAG/Caio (PR)
Blumenau/FURB (SC)
Força Atlética/Gov. de Goiás/Estácio de Sá/(GO)
Apahand/UCS/Caxias do Sul (RS)
Copel/Unipar/Umuarama (PR)
Metodista/São Bernardo (SP)
Espírito Santo Handebol (ES)
Santa/Feevale/Novo Hamburgo (RS)
Vila Olímpica Manuel Tubino/FAB (RJ)
Liga Itapeviense de Handebol (SP)
AD Santo André (SP)
Supergasbras/UNC/Concórdia (SC)

My purpose in this thread is to offer some information about team rosters, when possible. Few teams have web pages, and fewer have updated ones. And, of course, if someone has any question I could answer, to answer it.
In the next post I’ll pick some team and list it’s players.

Ok, I'll start with Metodista/São Bernardo.
It's the most succesfull brazilian team, several players now well known in europe played for Metodista. In the last two seasons they lost some important players and didn't replaced them, but they still a strong team in brazilian league.
I wrote the player's name, position, participation in World Championships (if it's the case) and european clubs played for, again, if it's the case.

Metodista/São Bernardo 2014

Francesca Paludo Gubert, GK.
Lívia Martins Horácio, LP. WCh Jr 05. Fleury(FRA), LeHavre(FRA).
Danielle de Souza Lira, LW.
Celia Janete Costa, RW. WCh Senior 09
Barbara B. Brocardo, RW. WCh Jr 10.
Thamiris Madeira Duarte, LB. WCh Jr 08.
Rosária Elizabete da Silva, LW. WCh Senior 09
Bruna Araujo dos Santos
Bruna de Oliveira Camboim
Ananda Carina Cardoso, RW.
Deborah Hannah Pontes Nunes, CB. WCh Jr 12, WCh Senior 13.
Ariadne Tomaz Moreira, GK.
Atalita Ramos Terence, CB. WCh Jr 08.
Cassia Arbulu de Oliveira, LP.
Adriana do Nascimento Lima, RB. WCh Senior 09. Maliye Milli Piyango(TUR), BM Mar Alicante(ESP), Hypo (AUT), Fehérvár KC(HUN).
Regiane dos Santos Silva, LP. WCh Senior 09.

Great thread Fabbr, thanks.

I have a question: How many spectators come to the league games? And is there more interest after winning the World Cup?

You are welcome, Dofer.
There is no official data about the attendance in the league games, but from my own experience it's very low. I can't say about the games in southern Brazil, especially Santa Catarina state, but here at Sao Paulo state the public attendance is low.
Well, after the World title there is going on a little more recognizing for the sport as a whole and the world championesses, but not for the league. There is more people interested in the National Team, but not in the league. Although, the govern is now puting a lot of money in brazilian handball federation, this is something that changed significantly.

You're welcome, Gyms!
These squads are for the season 2014 (the league will end in december 2014). Most of the teams in national league already played state leagues in 2014. São Paulo state's league, biggest in Brazil, is ending by now. Our handball seasons begin and end in the same year.
I'll continue posting here, for shure!

Yes, players get paid by a salary. I don't know the values, but Jaque Anastácio came to play for Metodista in the begining of 2014, and she told in an interview that the salary was about half the money she was paid in Dinamo Volgograd.
There is a governamental grant here, called "bolsa atleta" (Athlete Grant, literally), and about 150 handball players receive this grant. There are different payroll levels, and even the world championesses receive this grant (it's a monthly payment).

Re: Brazilian National League

Hi, Sarah, you're welcome!
There are Brazilian Handball Championships, both male and female, in all categories: senior, junior, youth, "cadete" (I don't know how this category is called in english). They are tournments, as you can see from the data you brought here about the junior championship. In some of these categories, there are regional classificatory tournments before the National tournment.
The National League, both male and female, is the only national senior championship with home and away matches, and they only last for about 3 months. The rest of the season the teams play state leagues (Brazil is a federation whose members are called states: São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Paraná etc). So, there is a São Paulo state league, a Santa Catarina state league and others, but not all states have handball leagues.
For the under age categories, there are only state leagues, aside of the National Tournments.

Unfortunately and unbelievably not ](*,)

This season start was postponed and still don't have an official date to begin. The main reason is because a team, Liga Itapeviense de Handebol, ended it's activities two weeks ago.
So, all the players I've listed above in the Itapeviense roster are now unemployed...

Hello, Gyms!
Well, the National League ended in 21/12. The final was Metodista/São Bernardo x Supergasbras/Concórdia, and Metodista won the title.
Just before the begining of the league two teams, Itapeviense and Umuarama, have withdraw from the competition.
I've stop posting at this topic because I was disapointed with the lack of official information about the league...
Blumenau ended third in the League. This position might have some practical relevance, because a Panamerican Club Championship was anounced for the next year, and probably it will have three brazilian clubs as participants.

Raina Braun (LW)
Ariane Jamyle (RW)
Lais Wiggers (RW)
Paloma Pfiffer Muniz (LP)
Scheyla Gris Schwarts (LP)
Barbara Schweder (GK)
Priscila Vitória (LP)
Josiane Hellmann (GK)
Amanda Caetano (CB)
Marília Harbs (LB)
Marcela Graciano (CB)
Manuela Pizzo (LB)
Luciana Mendoza (RB)
Caroline Dias Minto (RB)

There are other 3 or 4 youth age players in the squad, but I could not find their names. The significant addition maybe was Caroline Dias Minto, who played at Hypo in 2013/2014 and for Brazilian Jr NT at WCh 2014.
