The final 10 minutes or so of the 2000 Olympics final. Damn, it must have been good to be Anette Hoffmann that day. :)

Maybe someone could summarize this interview with Ljiljana Mugoša and educate us in handball history ;).

Time heals (almost) everything, it was nice, fast-paced handball with two fantastic teams :)

Can anyone help me with some players' names? It is a bit tricky, but I hope there is someone here with really good memory or really good sources ;)
-the Russian team at the 2000 Europeans, in Romania;
-the Yugoslavian team at the 2001 Worlds.

Both teams won bronze on those occasions.

Gah, Meteo beat me to it, I had already typed it up.

Ljiljana Knezevic got injured right in the beginning of the tournament and barely got to play. Branka Jovanovic was also injured, so it was mostly only Zlata Paplacko in front of the goal. This tournament was a big breakthrough for Bojana Petrovic, as she was then called. She was spotted from the stands by a certain A. Andersen, and the rest is history. Maja Savic also played on a very high level the whole tournament. Biljana Balac, already a veteran in her debut for the NT at this tournament, played the match of her life in the bronze medal match against Denmark and contributed a lot to the victory.

BTW, if someone, anyone happens to have that match against Denmark, please upload it somewhere and I'll be eternally grateful.

Sometimes I use Wikipedia for info about handball :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_handball

A lot of info about tournaments in the past, allthough it seems like they have
some trouble regarding Balkan teams ?
- do the future belong to the mad ? -

Thank you for the help. I remember watching those teams at the time, but no name came to my mind. Now I see why. Both teams were just beginning the generation change at the time. With Russia climbing the ranking in 2001 and Yugoslavia not having the chance to do the same.

Do you think, Joana, that generation was any better than today's? (I mean the players that Serbia and Montenegro have today, in the likes of Lekic, Popovic, Bulatovic).

I second that! Might add any of Romania's '99 or '00 matches:
- with Macedonia, France and Austria in '99
- with Ukraine and Russia in 2000
Also, the 2000 European final Hungary won or the 2003 WCh Serbia and Montenegro against Russia that I have read a lot about. I have the 2005 final btw Romania and Russia on VHS :D and I will put it on DVD some day and upload it.

That's a good question. Only two players remain from that generation, Savic who is in twilight of her career and Popovic. And Popovic is not really the same now and back then when she was Petrovic. :)
The main difference is that the generation of 2001 didn't really have a right back. Olivera Mugosa-Kecman played well in the Danish league, but somehow never made a true mark on the NT. We actually played with a righthanded player on RB position most of the time. If there was someone like Bulatovic on the 2001 team, that team would have been a nuclear bomb.
Also, IMO Ana Djokic is better than Dragica Milickovic who was a first choice pivot back then. On the other hand, the goalkeepers from 2001 are marginally better than today's.

But the thing that really separates the two teams is the sheer number of excellent shooters back then. Knezevic, Medved, Petrovic, Jovovic, Milanovic (who was never properly used on NT) + some others that weren't selected made for some truly scary potential in attack. Of course, that team was plagued with problems that didn't have anything to do with handball and thus never achieved more than a fraction of what they were capable of.

That was an incredibly impressive performance by Bojana P. who was having a rather poor tournament prior to that match. But against Russia she totally vindicated herself and with that match the whole team caught second wind and downed Korea in the next match with a stunning display of attacking handball. After that they had everything in their hands, next up was Austria who had already been eliminated, with Logvin and Fridrikas injured and spared for the match. It looked impossible to lose and with a win in that match SCG would have been in the semis and secured a spot at the Athens Olympics, but...

I thought last year's Buducnost was as good as it gets in terms of shooting. I hadn't seen something as beautiful as the Jovanovic(LB)-Popovic(PM)-Bulatovic(RB) line in a while. But I see how there would be less depth today, as young backs such as Knezevic are so often performing on the edge.
