This is a surprise. I expected Hungary and Serbia to get the spots.

I was hoping we could use this absence to rebuild our team since damn near everyone is dealing with some kind of injury, but that's not happening now. I seriously doubt we can deal with Sweden and France like we did in 2012, but I suppose we can get 3rd or 4th place in the group.

Well, it is not such a big surprise, just look at the poll question on the handball planet site, the combo of Serbia/Hungary wasn't even mentionned as a possibility.

I understand. This situation must be the most bitter for the Koreans.

The IHF selection of Iceland and Saudi Arabia made slightly more sense (other than financially) than the decision to pick Germany. It would seem that the notion of "best placed team in the World Championships" was a one-off to let Germany in. We are back to the Continental championships being used for picking the reserve nations. And so it should be. The Continental championships are the qualifying tournaments, and generally more appropriate. The World championships' present format makes it all depend on the draw. And this year it is worse than ever, of course, the bottom half far far better than the top.

One could argue, like the Swedish coach, that both positions should go to Asia, but that has not been the principle in the past. Under the rules that applied until earlier this year, the World Champion's continent, i.e. Europe got it.

I think that the IHF were right to pick Iceland (though I don't they will excell) and that Hungary can have little to complain of. But what I cannot figure out is why the Saudis got the other place. South Korea finished above the Saudis, didn't they? The IHF say that the Asian Federation nominated Saudi Arabia. Did they? Why?

Maybe the IHF is hoping that the Saudis will fill the stadiums since they're a neighboring country. Riyadh and al-Ahsa are not that far away.

I don't think many people will fly all the way to Qatar for this joke of a tournament, so we can expect mostly empty stands in most matches, I think.

A thousand times this. Alfred Gislason has said this many times, there is too much pressure on the players. A player in a top national team will participate in 5 national team tournaments in 4 years (Olympics, the WCh, the Euro, the WCh again, the Euro again) on top of his club duties. That is insane.

That's true. For example in volleyball you have World Championships in 4 years periods, (like Olympic games, football WC or Euro). I can't imagine such a exhausting tournament in every two years...

I think WCH is the money tree of IHF, which they can harvest in every two years. Since there are no other IHF tournament with such a financial potential (what, IHF Superjoke?!), they won't change the system. Even more, I guess those greedy guys would organize the event in every year if they could.

Another disaster for IHF:
Germany was given the wild card because of their economic importance and tv attendance. But today german public television ARD/ZDF announced that they will not be broadcasting the WCh 2015 because they couldn't reach an agreement with rightsholder BeIN Sport. According to german news no other tv channel has shown interest yet.

Has any TV station anywhere bought the broadcasting rights? I'm not aware of any.

It looks like unless the IHF streams the matches on Youtube themselves, none of us will be able to watch the tournament at all.

I found this hilarious article on the championship website from when the IHF signed the TV rights away to al-Jazeera.

I hope we will reach all handball enthusiasts worldwide with this new partnership in order to further develop our sport. I have some ideas and they have some ideas, and we have to see together how we can promote our sport. In four years we will evaluate where we are and which benefits we could take from this partnership. The revenue of this contract will be directly re-invested in the global development of handball and to exploit new markets, in which BeInSports already has a strong position.

What a joke. But the worst thing is, al-Jazeera has the rights to the 2017 WCh as well. #-o

@Ivar:
Last week TV2 (Norway) and RTL Croatia announced that they will be broadcasting the WCh. And of course in France it will be hostbroadcaster BeIN Sport itself.
